Most of the time, an MT4 indicator doesn't show because it was installed in the wrong folder, the platform wasn't restarted or refreshed, or "Allow DLL imports" and automated settings are blocking it. Less often, the file is incompatible (an MT5 file in MT4, for example) or the indicator isn't attached to the chart. Work through the checks below in order.
Quick checklist
- Check the file type. MT4 indicators are .ex4 or .mq4 files. Files ending in .ex5 or .mq5 are for MT5 and will not work.
- Check the folder. In MT4, go to File > Open Data Folder > MQL4 > Indicators and confirm the file is there. Files placed anywhere else won't appear.
- Restart MT4 or right-click Navigator > Refresh. The Navigator panel only lists new files after a refresh.
- Look under Navigator > Custom Indicators. If it's listed, drag it onto the chart. Installed is not the same as attached.
- Enable the right permissions. Press Ctrl+O (Tools > Options > Expert Advisors) and, if the indicator's documentation requires it, tick "Allow DLL imports". Only do this for files from a source you trust, since DLLs can run arbitrary code.
- Check the Experts and Journal tabs (Terminal window). Errors such as "cannot load" or "wrong parameters" point to the cause.
- Check the chart itself. The indicator may be drawn off-screen, use a colour matching your background, or be hidden in the Indicators list (Ctrl+I). Try a different timeframe or symbol, since some indicators only work on specific ones.
- Confirm there's enough history. Some indicators need loaded bars to calculate. Scroll back or download more history via Tools > History Center.

- Mobile app: MT4 mobile does not support custom indicators. See Can you use custom indicators on MT4 mobile?
- Broker build differences: Some brokers' MT4 versions behave differently. Confirm with your broker if a file still won't load.
- Corrupted or incomplete file: Re-download from the original source rather than a re-upload.
- Disconnected terminal: No live data means nothing updates. Check the connection indicator in the bottom right.
An indicator displaying correctly doesn't mean its signals are reliable. Treat any output as one input, test on a demo account first, and risk only what you can afford to lose.
