A forex signal is only useful if you can act on it accurately, on time, and at a size you can afford to lose. Most of the gap between a signal's advertised results and your own results comes from setup and execution, not from the signal itself. This page covers the whole path from receiving a signal to placing the trade on MT4 or another platform, and points to the detailed guides for each step.
One thing up front: no signal, indicator or setup removes risk. Leveraged forex trading can lose you more than you expect, and a polished setup does not change that. If you are unsure whether trading suits your finances, talk to a licensed financial professional before risking real money.
What "using signals" actually involves
A signal is a trade idea, usually a pair, direction, entry, stop loss and take profit. It reaches you in one of three ways:
Manual signals: a message by app, email, chat or dashboard. You place the trade yourself.
Indicator-based signals: an indicator installed on your chart that draws arrows or alerts.
Automated or copy-style signals: trades are mirrored or executed for you, often through an Expert Advisor or a copy service.!-- -->
Each has different failure points. Manual signals fail through delay and hesitation. Indicators fail through repainting and misconfiguration. Automation fails through connectivity, broker differences and over-trust. If you are new to the mechanics, start with How Forex Trading Signals Work.
Step 1: Vet the source before you set anything up
Setup effort is wasted on a weak provider. Before you connect anything, check whether the track record can be independently verified, whether the provider is open about losing periods, and whether the marketing relies on promised returns or screenshots of winning trades. Promises of profit are a red flag in every case. Our guide to Signal Safety: Legitimacy, Scams and Performance Verification walks through what to check. If you are still choosing, the Forex Signal Services & Indicators: Reviews and Comparisons page is the place to compare options. Always confirm current pricing, features and terms on the provider's official site, because they change.
Step 2: Choose your platform
MT4 remains widely supported by signal providers, indicators and Expert Advisors, which is its main practical advantage. That does not make it the best choice for everyone. MT5, cTrader and TradingView differ in order handling, available tools and how well they connect to signal services.
Platform
Where it tends to fit
Things to check
MT4
Indicators and EAs built for it; broad broker support
Whether your signal provider and broker both support it
MT5
Choose a platform your signals and broker both support.
Open a demo account and install indicators or connect the service.
Configure and test alerts on every device you will use.
Trade the demo for long enough to see losing streaks, not only wins.
Go live small, with written risk limits.
Compare your fills to the signal's and adjust your broker or setup if the gap is large.

Risk reminder: forex and leveraged products carry a high risk of loss, and past signal performance does not predict future results. Nothing here is personal financial advice. Only trade money you can afford to lose, and consider speaking with a licensed professional if you are unsure.
